I have chosen the article, “A right to choose death?” By Frances Myrna Kamm (1996) Beauchamp & Walters (2008), p.168-173. The point of this article is that euthanasia and physician assisted suicide are intended to benefit the patient. I liked this article it is an important debate more or less about intent for the greater good versus the lesser evil. She uses the argument that the physician orders morphine to relieve a patients’ severe pain, also knowing that the dose of morphine may kill the patient. Is this acceptable? She states that “killing the patient by giving the morphine for pain relief is permissible; killing the patient by giving morphine for death is impermissible” It is not morally wrong to give the patient a shorter life with less pain than it is to give the patient a longer life with severe pain. She also has a 3-step argument for euthanasia and physician assisted suicide, 1. We may permissible cause death as a side effect if it relieves the pain, because sometimes death is a lesser evil and pain relief is a greater good. 2. We may permissible intend other lesser evils to the patient, for the sake of her greater good. 3. Therefore, when death is a lesser evil, it is sometimes permissible for us to intend death in order to stop pain.” She also brings up the argument for duty. The doctor has a duty to his patient to relief suffering by giving the morphine and can not refuse the patient on the grounds that he would be a killer. This article has many strong points but at times it can be a bit confusing. The intent is clear. It is a duty to relieve suffering even if we know that the end result may be death. The death is a side effect and not the intent. This article also asks many questions that it does not answer. That would be the biggest weakness.
Hi R.M.!! I am going to say that I think this idea is fabulous. Posting an assignment.
Might I make a suggestion? Your reading list is in the comment section and at first I did not see it as a reading list. I thought is was simply a comment. After you post your Voki (or whatever you embed) you can simply hit the enter key to space down and then add to the main posting.
I have become obsessed with trying to make my blog appear as a traditional website, I really hate blogs. Oh well. I am nearing using it as a content management system, though Wordpress is better suited for that.
Today I managed to get a footer on my blog which I am happy with. Mrs A
